Thank you all for the informative and helpful responses.
Much useful knowledge about both LO and PDF has come to light (and solved my original problem).
More strength to the LibreOffice community!

substitution. I have not tried it.

Choose *Tools - Options'* /- LibreOffice - Fonts'           From: 
https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Fonts/

You must click in the box next to "Apply replacement table" before you 
can select the substitute fonts.
