The new version of Impress doesn't allow me to have a slide pane with

Are you really sure that it was ever possible to have more slides side by side in the left pane ??

I've never seen that. (testing ..) Ah well, indeed. It was possible up until OOo 3.3.0.
So the change has the same root cause as explained in the previous mail.
