While I have been critical of Microsoft's insistence that everyone do
things their way, I have to give them a little credit, as I continue to
wrestle with Math in OOo/LO while copy/paste MathML has worked with MSO
for some years now.

As I understand it, and if I am missing anything please let me know,
there is no way to insert MathML into an OOo/LO document. This was
reported as a bug at OOo in 2007, and is listed as a bug
http://openoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=14252

Thre are work arounds one way and another (see, e.g.,
http://dpcarlisle.blogspot.com/2007/04/xhtml-and-mathml-from-openofficeorg-22.html,
http://www.robweir.com/blog/2006/08/demo-mathematica-mathml-and-odf.html) but
even if I have an mml document there is simply no simple way to insert
pre-existing MathML into an OOo/LO document

There have been projects such as Jex which try to address such matters
but they are far removed from the situation we see with MSO.

Of course I can use extensions to insert LaTex, but then the Latex is
converted to images, which is arguably counterproductive if I want the
MathML or Tex exposed. Of course I can also use extensions to export as
Xhtml+Mathml, but how difficult can we actually make this?

I suppose one could experiment with adding ASCIIMathML to the document,
or a reference to MathJax, but once again that is too much complexity
for most folk who simply want to be able to copy and paste equations -
transparent nd universal math...
