I usually install .deb packages using the included gui GDebi installer.  
The filetype is already set to be opened automatically by the installer, so:

1. Launch Nautilus
2. Navigate to the .deb file
3. Click on the .deb

(and GDebi should launch automagically).  More on GDebi here:
