I have checked in my installs (Ubuntu 10.04) for both LibO beta1 and
beta2 and the default english spell checker is working fine. Which
version of LibO do you have installed?

$ cat /opt/libreoffice3/program/versionrc

$ cat /opt/libreoffice3/program/versionrc

how did you install it, and which OS?

$ version

But here's a kicker. I installed LO 3.3.0beta2 on my Windows laptop
at work and the spellchecker seemed to work fine - until I opened the
Tools->Options->Languages->Writing Aids, and then when I saved the
options (without changing that one), the spell checker stopped
working, just like my CentOS here at home.

It seems that changing the options kills the spell checker...?
