Is all I could find, too.  It seems the ability to remove the
underlining has been eradicated. Maybe as an unintentional side effect
of other changes.

IME (with this, and other software packages) when such consequences
occur the chances of getting the old (i.e. your preferred) behaviour
back lie somewhere between 'slim and none'.
