I have no idea what might be causing your Cntrl-F failure, but would just suggest that you give Cntrl-H a try in lieu.

As you probably know, Cntrl-H brings up the find&replace dialogue. It is a superset of the simple "Find", and will therefore do anything that Cntrl-F can do, plus lots more.

I doubt that it relates to your problem, but I find that the small text input box opened by Cntrl-F is rather obscure, and often goes unnoticed down in the corner of the screen.
