Subject: [libreoffice-users] Problem with chapter numbering and TOC.

Hi Dave,

Dave Barton schrieb am 17-Nov-19 um 09:19:

I have created a sample document with a near identical structure and
made it available at:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4dqiurp1sv9z1zk/TOC_Test.odt/file

It would be much appreciated if someone could take a look at this
document and offer any suggestions about why the automatically
generated
chapter headings are not appearing in the TOC.

Your headings have no content. You need to write at least a blank.

Kind regards
Regina

Sorry Regina, can you explain what you mean by "no content". The chapter
headings are auto-generated by the "Heading 1" paragraph style and are
clearly visible in the first paragraph of each chapter break in the
document and also in the Navigator.

When the Chapter Numbering dialog is first opened both the Before and
After fields are empty. I filled the Before field with the word
"Chapter" plus one space.

The heading in the text is e.g. "Chapter 1". The part "Chapter " is
generated by the outline style and the part "1" is generated by the
outline style too. So the heading in the text has no own content, but
what you see is totally generated by the outline style.

"True" headings would be for example
Chapter 1 Introduction
Chapter 2 Examples
Chapter 3 Experiments
Chapter 4 Conclusions
where "Introduction", "Examples", "Experiments", "Conclusions" are the
content of the respective heading.

To be shown in the TOC, there need to be some content in the heading.
And because you decide to have no content there, I have suggested to use
a blank instead of a real content. So your heading in the text would be
"Chapter 1 "
          ^------ blank

Kind regards
Regina

Many thanks for the perfect explanation Regina.

While it's unclear why it was coded that way and is definitely not
intuitive, it does provide a solution.

When I have the time I will add a not to the on-line help and ask
Olivier to make a note for the help file in the next release. I will
check out the Getting Started and Writer Guides to ensure this point is
made clear in the next revisions.

Kind Regards
Dave
