Yes,
Try to download the latest English extension from:
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/extensions/english-dictionaries
And use the Extension Manager to install it.
Tell me if this fixes the issue.
Thanks!

My OS is Debian Stretch. My version of LibreOffice is

I can open the Spelling window with F7. At the top of the window is a
place to indicate text language, which when the window opens says
<none>. The two options are English (UK) or English (USA). Preceding
each option is a blue check mark with in a small font the letters ABC.
When I click on one or other of these options nothing happens; the
selection box still says <none>. So I cannot check spelling, or have
hyphenated words.
Comments/suggestions anybody?
