Hi Charles.
It depends upon what you are doing, as from 3.1 there have been some changes.
If you use EPS illustrations, you may need to stay with an older version.
If you produce larger documents with more numerous images distributed in PDF (books, manuals) it may pay to stay with the last of the 4 series. If you just do day to day word processing and spread sheets, I would recommend the last of the 5.2 series. The 5.3 series may even be fine.

I have not found any of them to be unstable, just bags that affect certain areas of use.
