After fiddling for some time and seeing that there is no option to
install a new database, or view data sources, I remembered that from
some reason Ubuntu does not install the base component by default.
Installing the base component fixed the problem.

Didn't read your previous mails and don't know if that was discussed
already, but that's how I fixed it. Although, you might have different
I/O error.
