the styles and formattig window shows the style names using their
respective styles, which is very annoying (to say the least). Didn't
find a checkmark in the tools -> options. How can I switch off this
"feature"?

Easily done

1. Tools -> Options -> Advanced: Expert configuration dialog
2. Search string "StylesAndFormatting"
3. highlight the stanza
4. a Boolean, so True is enabled and False is disabled -- the Edit button
will toggle.
5. OK to apply and exit.

tdf#93845 <https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93845> is
an open enhancement to provide a GUI control in addition to the Expert
configuration setting.
