Is there any way to translate a document in Writer from English to Spanish. M$ Office has been able to pull this trick off for years.

I think you are overestimating Microsoft Office. Some of its components - e.g. Microsoft Word - have a translate facility, but this merely sends the text of your document to a web facility and displays the result in a browser window - and you need to copy and paste it back into your document. You then presumably need to repeat all your formatting from scratch. Microsoft Word doesn't do the work itself. You can paste your text into such a facility just as easily yourself.

Surely with the power of a global development team LibreOffice can do the same.

You need only the power of your own index finger. Try Google Translate <https://translate.google.com/> or Bing Translator <https://www.bing.com/translator/>.

I trust this helps.
