       Thanks for responding ...
yet when I click on that URL, all I see are these titles (listed
below) which mean next to nothing to me ;-)
maybe if I explain my thinking when I see this list, others too
will be helped -
             [my comments in parentheses]

  1 Introducing Writer [I began reading this back-when - I gave up &
started using the program; the trial-by-doing-method]
2 Setting up Writer [but since it's already installed on the machine
??? ]
3 Working with Text [grammar & typing I know]
4 Formatting Pages [but I don't want it to re-format the whole
machine]
5 Printing, Faxing, Exporting, and E-mailing [ok, I understand this
one; but have no use for LO doing these functions]
6 Introduction to Styles [I began reading this back-when - I gave up
& started using the program; the trial-by-doing-method]
  7 Working with Styles [???]
8 Working with Graphics ; Working with Images [ok, I think I
understand this one; but have no use for LO doing these functions]
9 Working with Tables [ok, I understand this one; but have no use
for LO doing these functions]
10 Working with Templates [I've tried but cannot understand this]
11 Using Mail Merge [ok, I understand this one; but have no use for LO
doing these functions]
12 Tables of Contents, Indexes, and Bibliographies [ok, I understand
this one; but I know how to do these without the program's help]
13 Master Documents [???]
14 Working with Fields [???]
15 Using Forms in Writer [???]
16 Customizing Writer [???]
A Keyboard Shortcuts [but shortcuts don't simplify these machines for
me]

and page numbering is where ???

Writer Guide 4.2 Chapter 4 Page 35 has a very obscure, unrelated &
meaningless heading called "Page Numbering".

Good evening
I am sure, this has been asked (and answered!) before, but I cannot find
it in the archives.

I have a (actually 3) book, where I would like to have NO page numbering
for the first 3 pages and then start with "1".
Conversion to "title page" seems to work only for the first page.
Attempts at assigning a self-made "front matter" page style to the first
pages fails too. They are and remain "default style".

Trying to temper with "text flow" under paragraph styles does not help
either.
Either I DO get page numbers, or I DO NOT.
But so far all attempts (reading through the official documentation) at
setting the said numbering have failed.

I assume, there is a little trick to achieve that and I am just too
stupid to see it.
Therefore, I would be grateful, if someone could give me one or two
pointers.

Thank you.
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
