I just tried to apply "hatching" to an empty space (just marked by
an underline and when printed to be filled by an amount on a
receipt). It seems to be not possible, unless you create an "object" first.
Do you for some reason not want to create such an object?
Or IS there a trick to achieve this feat?
o Go to View | Toolbars > | Drawing to display the Drawing toolbar.
o Click the Text (T) icon.
o Drag the cursor to create a text box.
o Type something into the box: a single blank will suffice.
o Click on the edge of the box or click outside it and then again
inside it, so as to see the eight coloured handles.
o Go to Format | Object > | Area... | Hatching and make your selection.
Alternatively:
o Enter a string of blanks.
o Select them.
o Go to Format | Character... | Font Effects.
o For Underlining, select Single; for Strikethrough, select "With /";
and perhaps for Font colour, select a suitable Grey.
I trust this helps.
