You must first go to the 'settings' of the program, then you can set
it according to your wishes -
one of the settings will allow you to view all ;-)

I like Thunderbirds 'Smart Reply' button, but sadly it only works on
the button toolbar down on the message header pane (which I keep
collapsed, so never use), not on the main toolbar.
What is the "message header pane" and how would you activate it if you
wanted to? I've never heard of this.
It is at the top of each message, contains all of the headers (Subject,
To/From, Date/time, etc)...
Not on my Thunderbird. I have the date and time, no subject, and no smart
reply button.
What you see below is copied and pasted in. (Without the boilerplate at the
bottom.)

Now in the gray area, above the actual message, I have the From, the
Subject,
and the To, filled in, and way over at the right I have radio boxes with
Reply, Reply List, (checkmark) Forward, Archive, Junk and Delete.
Under Delete is a time, which is wrong, and under that is Other Actions
(checkmark).
Under Other Actions is a pull-down menu, but it doesn't have a "Smart
Button."
My Thunderbird is 17.0.2, running at the moment on Linux Mint 14, but I've
never
seen any Smart Button on any version.
