Is not my purpose to start a lengthy discussion, but I must share with all of you my opinion.

It is desirable that the user shall have a way to configure the date insertion. If that's not possible, it means that it must be input by hand every time is needed.

The second reason for a configurable date format is because some of my writings are done with markdown, converted to odt or docx with Pandoc.

Under this mechanism, the final date is allways an abbreviated date that not allways have the same meaning for someone from a different culture.
