First I put my fonts into /usr/share/fonts/truetype and when that
didn't work, I put them into home/.fonts. I remembered that just now
and deleted them from the former to see what would happen. And it
solved the problem. Now I have them all recognized and working.

But it's odd that the malfunction was so selective about which fonts
not to set up properly.

You probably forgot to update the font cache 'sudo fc-cache -f' when you
placed them in /usr/share...
