Hi David,

The formatting in my previous message was mangled. I have reformatted using
| for column separator and _ for null character.
I can't seem to get Calc to recognise column labels in array formulas. In
addition, it seems to behave differently depending on whether there is
number or text in the cells:
With text
val|new val|result_|formula in previous column___|expected
_a|______|new val|{=IF('new val'="",'val','new val')}|_a
_a|__d___|new val|{=IF('new val'="",'val','new val')}|_d
With numbers
num|new num|result|formula in previous column______|expected
_12_|_______|_12_|{=IF('new num'="",'num','new num')}|_12
_23_|___24__|_23_|{=IF('new num'="",'num','new num')}|_24
If the content is text and the first cell is empty, then the automatic
label detection might fail. In those cases define the label explicitly
with Insert > Names > Labels.
Why do you need a matrix formula? And how do you enter it?
Kind regards
Regina
