Dear All,

I would like to ask some help regarding thesaurus in Libreoffice. I'm
a librarian an whenever I hear that there is thesaurus in the
Libreoffice I cannot decide whether this is a dictionary of the
synonyms or a real thesaurus used by librarians.

Here you can read about what the thesaurus is:

Thanks in advance,

András

Here is the definition of "thesaurus" according to your link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thesaurus - "A thesaurus is a reference work that lists words grouped together according to similarity of meaning (containing synonyms and sometimes antonyms), in contrast to a dictionary, which contains definitions and pronunciations. "

The one[s] I have installed, with 4.0.0, shows similar terms. For "belly" it shows several types of nouns and verb replacements for that word/term. I also know that there are adjectives and adverbs listed for some words. These may be listed by other thesaurus systems as synonym, derivatives, kind of, kinds, and parts. I have even seen the term of "domain" listed under the term "relatives".

So, we have the synonyms and other "relatives". As for antonyms, well I have not looked at a lot of words in the thesaurus system/file[s] I use, but we are dependent on others to create these for us. Actually, my "book thesaurus" is a "Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus" and I do not see antonyms listed for the words I looked at.

As far as I know, most of the dictionary and thesaurus options are based on the WordNet and Hunspell format and "offerings". We rely on these free "offerings", and others, to be able to have language aids included in LibreOffice.

SO, please tell us what is used by a librarian/library as a reference thesaurus. I would like to know. What do you mean by "real thesaurus used by librarians".

Also, I use an offline dictionary[definitions] and thesaurus called "Artha" that I use on my Ubuntu/Linux and Windows systems. This is free, like LibreOffice. I looked up many words using it, over the past few years, and I do not remember if it showed and antonyms.
