HI :)
Yes, MariaDb is a good back-end for Base and is a drop-in replacement for MySql.  It developed from
MySql which is released under an OpenSource license.  Many of the MariaDb people were heavily
involved in MySql and their community includes some of the original MySql programmers.

The LibreOffice-MySql connectors should work just as well with MariaDb although not all of them
have been tested against it.

MySql and MariaDb are quite heavy-duty, i think Postegresql is too.  There are much smaller,
lighter, faster back-ends (such as HSqlDb and others) that might be more useful for non-corporate
users.  The internal/embedded version of HSqlDb is apparently not great but as a separate back-end
it's great even though it's java-based.

Regards from
Tom :)

Is there an explanation of what MariaDB is that can be understood more generally than in the
reference given in this message, or is MariaDB of interest only to programmers? It sounds as if it
is a data base that could be useful to a broader public.

This is the third 5.5-based release. The MariaDB 5.5 series is the
combination of MariaDB 5.3 and MySQL 5.5 with a few extra features and
bug fixes.

MariaDB includes a User Feedback plugin. This plugin is disabled by
default. If enabled, it submits basic, completely anonymous MariaDB
usage information. This information is used by the developers to track
trends in MariaDB usage to better guide development efforts.

If you would like to help make MariaDB better, please add
--plugin-load=feedback.so to your my.cnf file! On Windows, add
"feedback=ON" to your my.ini file, or click the checkbox during the
installation of the MSI package.

See http://kb.askmonty.org/en/user-feedback-plugin for more information.
