I was under the impression that Java was not required anymore for this,
but probably it is as you say.

XHTML export does not work for me when I disable Java.

However, I set Java Options to use java (from sun) but it still
doesn't work both via uno and menu (save as and export). Do I need to
do something special to setup java for that option to appear in the
export dialog?

Works for me using the GUI under Linux with
LibO 3.3.4 and Open JDK 1.6.20
LibO 3.3.4 and Sun JDK 1.6.20
LibO 3.3.4 and Sun JDK 1.6.26
LibO 3.5.1 and Sun JDK 1.6.26
Apache OpenOffice 3.4 and Sun JDK 1.6.26
