Thanks for the suggestion - I've got the image files. But how do I use the image within Impress? I want the image to appear on every slide and I don't want its position to change when I change the slide layout. I haven't been able to find anything in help or on the web.

If pptx are like docx, they are zip files. You could try to open one
with an archive explorer (like winzip, winrar, 7zip...) and grab the
background image to use it.

OK - since my previous attempt was a debacle involving a mix of LO 3.5,
3.4.5, Impress templates and inconsistent behavior, I'll just ask about what
I want to do. I have an existing ODP file, but I'd like to get the slide
background from a PPTX file. No formatting, just the background image. My
duckduckgo searches have turned up nothing specific. Anyone on the list done
something similar?
