I believe that will explain my question.
I have learned something during my experimentations. If the files are in ods format, the update
works correctly. It is when the files are in xls format that the links don't update.
So I have two work arounds. . .1) Keep the files in xls format and open the source before I update
the link, or 2) convert the files to ods format.

Again, I'm aware of 5 different ways to link spreadsheet contents in ODF spreadsheets. All of
them work. We can not know what you are doing exactly.
