Thanks for the response - and to Brian who emailed me
After a bit more investigation I'm (fingers crossed) convinced its to do
with a corrupted spreadsheet rather than a failure within Libreoffice. The
broken up column header was only happening with one spreadsheet, the
spreadsheet was saved as xls, stored in dropbox and shared with MS Office
users, I'm presuming that the constant opening and saving between the two
office programs eventually managed to corrupt it and Libreoffice was
struggling to handle it.
Have recreated the spreadsheet and its working ok - gave me a chance to bit
of needed tweaking and tidying it up.
But, if this does reappear then your possible solution will be put to task
