Thanks Andreas,

I should have been more specific. The servers where I have experienced this
problem have a text-mode installation of Linux (no X-Windows).  So there is
no windowing system available.

If your Linux installation included graphics mode, then I wouldn't expect
the error to occur.

I tested your exact command line on an old IBM ThinkPad and get no error message at all. I can connect via Python and create a document. I am using the original LibreOffice 3.4.3 from http://libreoffice.org with XUbuntu 10.4.
