Actually the regression happened before the fork because it didn't work in OOo 3.4 Beta either, as I mentioned ;)

Unfortunately since development for xnumbers stopped 3 years ago, the chances that it will work in future versions of LO seems rather slim...

Are you suggesting that LO forked from OOo 3.4.x rather than OOo 3.3.x? If so, then the regression is with OOo. That is no reason however for LO to follow suit.
