Hi :)
The Return looks different in different apps, for example in GEdit it shows as a
/n
I tend to select an area that includes a carriage-return and then try
find&replace to see what character is put in the Find box. Sometimes i have to
copy&paste the selected area into the Find box.

In one sense, you cannot: every return *defines* the end of a paragraph, so if
you have three consecutive returns you have two additional, empty paragraphs, in
fact. And empty paragraphs are generally a bad idea: instead, set paragraph
spacing to establish what you need.
Any recommendations?
Use Find & Replace to search for ^$ (an empty paragraph) and replace it by
something that won't already occur in your document - perhaps ##. (You need
"Regular expressions" to be ticked.) This appears to catch only alternate
consecutive empty paragraphs, which is ideal in your case. Then search for ##
and replace it with nothing.
But better still, simply replace ^$ with nothing - to remove all empty
paragraphs - and then set spacing before or after paragraphs to achieve the
layout you need.
I trust this helps.
