Hi Ya'akov,

I would like to create layouts which I could use repeatedly without having to specify all of the
details every time.

I am guessing that the way to do this is by adding them to the 'predefined layouts'.

I thought it probably had something to do with the master page, but I really don't know.

What you are looking for is probably 'templates'.
File > Templates > Manage and the related Help.

Also there is excellent documentation

I would suggest to look at
 - LibreOffice Getting Started guide
   - Chapter 4 - Getting Started with Writer
 - LibreOffice Writer Guide
   - Chapter 4 - Formatting Pages
   - Chapter 10 - Working with Templates in Writer

Hope that helps as a good starter.

Regards,
