I have 4 trials on this matter.

Browser : Firefox 4.0.1
OS : Windows XP

All work fine for me.
LibreOffice 3.3.3rc1, 3.4.0
Can you have a look in Tools > Options > Writer > View, section Show, Images and objects .. ?
