Don't know what "plonking" is but one should not be discouraged to use
It's an old USENET slangword, meaning adding someone to your killfile.
Most USENET newsreaders had a feature of filtering out posts from
users who were in blacklist, (a.k.a. killfile), so that noise generated
by regular trolls could be avoided (you could not ban people from
USENET and deleting posts was also almost impossible - it was one
amazingly efficient, reliable and democratic thing). Adding a name to
the blacklist was 'dropping someone into the killfile' and 'plonk' is
the sound of dropping something into a (metal) trashcan.

So, only time will tell if the participants in this funny topic
actually receive assistance to resolve any questions they have. As a
digest-mode user, this filtering function is not relevant; I just
ignore the rubbish and if necessary delete...
