This is interesting.  I have seen a few occasions where
saving files as .odt has provided the work-around to
some compatibility issues.

Convert them later to .doc or .docx and, voila, issue
resolved!

I am on iMAC OS X 10.6.6 using LibreOffice 3.3.1.2,
so those may be distinguishing factors.  However,
newer users in our community should be informed
that saving files as .odt and converting later may
provide the overall solution.

At least it would be a start to solving some of these
problems.  I hope that I am not duplicating input that
others have thoughtfully provided  -  only to offer an
update from an iMAC perspective.
