I have switched to Java 1.6.0_22 and that seems to have done the trick.
Note I did not specifically choose this version, it is what LibreOffice
'chose' when installing from the PPA.
When I went to Tools > Options > LibreOffice-Java, both versions were
listed only the older one was actually selected. Apart from the obvious
version change the older version is using java-6-openjdk whereas the
newer version is java-6-sun-1.6.0.22
