If you can tell us such an example of a character that does not work,
then it might be possible to fix it for everyone.

I tried :
mathematical double-struck capital t : u1D54B : 𝕋
greek small letter alpha : u03B1 : α
greek small letter beta : u03B2 : β
greek small letter gamma : u03B3 : γ
greek small letter delta : u03B4 : δ
greek small letter pi : u03C0 : π
greek capital letter sigma : u03A3 : Σ
estimates : u2259 : ≙
not a subset of : u2284 : ⊄
subset of : u2282 : ⊂
less-than or equal to : u2264 : ≤
greater-than or equal to : u2265 : ≥
almost equal to : u2248 : ≈
not almost equal to : u2249 : ≉
not equal to : u2260 : ≠
script small l : u2113 : ℓ

only u1D54B : 𝕋  worked

I tried all of these and they work for me.
Let's see again how to type them:

Cltr+Shift+u # at this point you see an underlined
'u' character, which means start typing the code.

2113 # you type the codepoint (without
the 'u'). Backspace is OK to fix things.

Spacebar # You press the spacebar to commit the
letter. Enter is also fine.

and at this point you get ℓ.

Can you give some info about your distribution? Which version of LibO
you are running?
This feature is a GTK+ feature, which means that it won't work at all
if you activated IBus.
