Hi :)

There are a number of existing training sites for OpenOffice
  http://documentation.openoffice.org/tutorials/index.html
  http://www.tutorialsforopenoffice.org/
  http://www.learnopenoffice.org/
  http://inpics.net/
If we could contact them and ask them to update their websites to include the
names "LibreOffice" and "The Document Foundation" alongside the name
"OpenOffice" or even to replace it entirely then we have ready-made programmes
already in place.  It would help a lot if someone with an email address ending
in "@documentfoundation.org" and ideally someone reasonably official with an
equivalent openoffice address could contact the 4 sites.  I tried contacting the
named person on the "Contact us" page of the "inpics" site but it was a dead
address.  I would guess that the middle 2 websites are probably the better ones
to approach.

I don't know quickly information disseminates through the rest of the world but
in England almost no employers recognise any qualifications apart from those
they studied at school themselves a few decades ago.  Some "professional studies
programmes" are recognised but even things like AAT are rarely known of despite
being heavily promoted outside their specialist areas.  I think we need to
develop programmes that give people well-recognised, well-established and
well-reputed certificates.  Such things as ECDL, NVQ, CLAIT, IBT are existing
certification programmes that have been heavily promoted and i think we have got
to build (a) training programme(s) to lead to those otherwise our certificates
will be worthless and suffer from extremely low take-up.

I personally think that 1 programme leading to the highest of those but allowing
people to just do early stages of the modules to get the easier qualifications
might be the fastest way to get most of those programmes in place.
Alternatively just getting the most famous one, ECDL, covered and allowing
people to just take the exams without having to study might be a fast way to get
people winning the certificates quickly.  I don't think NVQ is really viable but
i am not sure how it works at all.

Also to get any recognition we need to get into schools and places where
children might study, perhaps inner-city projects.  Unfortunately i think that
area is already heavily dominated by MicroSquish and excessive FUD working
against us.

Good luck all and many regards from
Tom Davies :)

One other option is for TDF itself to be a partner in the project (or maybe
we submit more than one application) with an allocated budget. That would
require a commitment by the legal representative of TDF in early February
before the application is submitted. (Technically it would be possible to
submit an application with TDF as a partner and then TDF could withdraw
after approval and another partner take its place so it is not an absolute
commitment) A typical budget would be around 20,000 Euros per year over 2
years to pay for travel for marketing and dissemination, time for
development work eg screen casts of how to use LO, development of tests or
tasks to check competence against criteria, translations. Again part of the
purpose of the meeting in Berlin is to decide what needs doing and broadly
to allocate the tasks in one or more applications. TDF does not have to be
represented in Berlin for this, but we do anticipate having Skype or
something similar for remote access to at least part of the meeting time.
Manfred is the best person to talk to about that (Also his German is better
than mine :-) )

One last thought, experience in EU projects is important in bidding for
grants so from that point of view it is worth considering TDF gaining that
experience. Then there are possibilities to bid for funding for eg
Development of Innovation. Key Activities in ICT, and probably grants to
support training developers that would actually support development itself.
Learning how to do all this could be a useful longer term investment.

Current situation is that Manfred Reiter and myself have organised a
preparatory meeting in Berlin 28th January. We have confirmed delegates
attending from the UK, DE, Ro, BG, CZ, ES also possibly NL and IT too.
Anyone else wanting to attend should e-mail Manfred (or me and I will
forward it) as we have to tell the venue how many people will be there. If
there is interest we can try to arrange a conference or at least an IRC
session for part of the time.

the discussion with use of the mark, endorsement by the foundation and the
like have to be taken with the steering committee, I guess -- but
independent from that, I am interested to join.

My finances don't permit me a trip, but maybe we can set-up a conference
call on that day? I am happy to provide dial-in options.
