The translation is here.Guarulhos, May 18^th , 2012. LibreOffice "Technology for Citizens Best International Software" award from City of Guarulhos, Brazil, in reconnaissance of the importance of LibreOffice in the social programs of the city for its population.
The award was received by Ms Eliane Domingos, a TDF member and activist in the Brazilian LibreOffice community. LibreOffice is included in Guarux distribution, an Ubuntu based Linux distribution assembled by the City's IT department, for use by all the city's public servants and in the city "telecentros", which are centers maintained by the city to allow the economically deprived population to use computers and to access the internet, as part of the social program to raised the population awareness on new technologies.
"The award is special for The Document Foundation because it shows how important is LibreOffice and FOSS in general for the emerging countries that need absolutely to close the gap of knowledge and is a way to eradicate poverty and bring a significant part of the city population into the information mainstream" says Eliane. "For me it is also special because I am deeply involved in promoting LibreOffice as a valuable tool for all Brazilians", she completed.
The Mayor of Guarulhos, Sebastião Almeida, reminded that the role of the public administration in the technology improvements: "Technology only makes sense if aimed to the citizen promotion and valuation, and the mission of the public administration is to innovate more and more so that the citizen lives happier and better", says Almeida.
