I think that LibreOffice will be recognised as "OpenOffice" because the codebase 
is so much the same.  


Look in your systems monitor to see what processes are running.  LibreOffice 
shows up as "soffice".  Or try starting LibreOffice from the command-line.  The 
command is soffice both results exactly the same as with OpenOffice.


The key message i get from those stats is that people prefer OpenSource for 
heavy, efficient usage but are happy enough to stay with MS for occasional use.

Web-browsers are highly likely to be used by an on-line gaming community.  
Office packages would be extra bloat on a system that many gamers would be 
streamlining.  We can't really read much into office suites figures quoted in 
Steam's stats.


On a side-issue, we would expect an on-line gamer community  to be extremely 
fussy and knowledgeable about web-browsers so the stats are interesting there 
... 

63.05% have FireFox 
19.82% have Internet Explorer
08.69% have Safari
Sadly the stats don't include 'obvious' choices such as Chrome.  Anyway, more 
people have gone to the trouble of adding MS Office's database program than have 
kept IE!  


Remember this is only Windows users so seeing Safari at all is a surprise.  When 
the Mac figures are released i would expect 90% of them to have Safari because 
it is easier to stick with whatever is already there rather than install 
something new.  Uninstalling something takes extra unnecessary effort when you 
can have both/some/all side-by-side.  That is what is so amazing about the 
stats.  IE is automatically included in almost all installs of Windows but 
people have been actively removing it!  



Also Steam is dedicated to preventing linux users using Steam's services.  A few 
linux-users might have slipped in with Wine, Codeweavers, PlayOnLinux or 
something but most of them are likely to have a dual-boot system that avoids 
"giving away" that they are on linux.  Even on their support page it states 
"There are no plans to create a native Linux Steam Client at this time."

Most people that have been trying to get Steam working in Linux will recognise 
the quote as a massive understatement.


Finally, Steam is for gamers so it is amazing to see that any of them have any 
Office Suite installed as it is "extra bloat".  As i already stated a lot of 
linux users are likely to have a dual/multi-boot for this type of thing, if they 
take their gaming seriously.  Windows users generally might not be so savvy 
about optimising their systems.  Out of all Windows users it seems that gamers 
are most likely to have a dual-boot system and most likely to have optimised the 
gaming boot even though  it is not easy to do this with Windows.  Dual-booting 
is easy if linux is in the mix because the linux boot-loaders automatically 
detect other operating systems and automatically add them into a menu for the 
user to be able to choose.

Interesting stats but "take with a pinch of salt" with regard to Office Suites

Hi Dave,

Oddly perhaps I find the most interesting number to be MS Front Page. I
wonder how many of the 25 Million users opted in to the survey?

ps - this would be the type of email that deserves to go to the
international list, as you did, and then it doesn't really need to be
posted to the US specific list also, IMO, which makes it harder to
follow the conversation as it progresses.
