I totally agree with you, Marc, and I'm surprised to hear the
registration page has been taken down. While it's true that it is a
nuisance, to remove it altogether removes an enormous opportunity for
accurate data collection.
Instead of removing the registration page altogether, how about
replacing it with something simpler? Maybe even just a name and
state/country collector? Removing the data collection point altogether
will create a huge blind spot between us and our users.
Hi Anthony, Marc,
sure, if there's a less invasive, less annoying way of getting that
info, I would be interested - but the old registration dialog was
simply a huge, royal PITA, and pretty much everyone I know clicked
it away immediately (which totally defeats its purpose).
For linux, something like the mentioned popularity contest is much
better (and benefits all floss projects) - for Win32/Mac, I would
guess one could get much better data from (opt-in) update
notifications.
Cheers,
