Alternatively we could fix the code by adding a special string for
the case where there are no matches, eg, “no matches found”. This has
the advantage that it will seem more natural in English too. I made a
bug and patches for that approach:
This doesn't really scale in general, since e.g. the example for
Indonesian uses the same for 0 and 1 while German uses a dedicated
form for a single item.
Or rather this "benefits" some languages more than others. Not sure
whether that's worth it.
But I guess in this case still OK/reasonable..
I think zero results is quite a special case though. For example in the
Find & Replace dialog in Writer we already have a special string for
zero results (“Search key not found”) when you click the Find All
button.
I find it hard to imagine there is any language where the most natural
way to say there are no results is something like “0 results found”
(containing the digit zero), so I’d go out on a limb and say the special
string benefits all languages.
I added it as a suggestion for french along with a comment pointing to
the thread, so Sophie can review it.
Thanks. Let’s hope the other three affected languages can fix it too
because I wouldn’t know what to suggest for them.

– Neil
