Question about Paste Special dialog in CALC 7.2

On the Paste Special dialog in CALC 7.2 there is a checkbox labeled
“Run immediately”. It is selected by default. Can someone tell me what
it does, and what happens if it is not selected? I did some
experiments and could see no difference. I couldn’t find it in the
Help. The dialog has been rearranged in v7.2, and this checkbox is
new, so it is not mentioned in the Calc 7.1 Guide.
Thank you!

"Run Immediately" off means the button applies settings only)

Hi, Jean,

it is really ambiguous. The tooltip says:

Inserts the contents of the clipboard into the current file in a
format that you can specify.

But this is the default tooltip for the Paste Special window (it also shows
upon the Cancel or OK button etc.).

I still cannot see the point in it. If you do not run it immediately, can
you run it in a week? Or after data is updated?

Hi , Ilmari,

it it is off it still pastes the content; In both ways the settings and
formatting does not get copied (i,e. the font color), but the values do get
copied. Only if you check Formats in the Paste Special window also the
formatting gets pasted.

All,

First of all, it is true that the help page does not yet describe the revised layout and functionality of the Paste dialog. We will catch up soon no doubt.

Similarly the Calc Guide doesn't yet describe the new dialog - I'm working on that.

The nice thing about the "Run immediately" checkbox is that if unticked, you can press one of the four shortcut buttons to see which combination of options on the right hand side of the dialog would apply if that short cut button was actioned "for real". In previous versions of the software I often wondered which combination of options was equivalent to each of the (three) preset buttons.

The default is for the "Run immediately" button to be checked (whenever you open the dialog), so that a click on a preset button is actioned immediately and the dialog is closed, which is what the experienced used would require.

Steve

Steve,
THANK YOU for that clear and detailed explanation. Much appreciated.
