Illustrations used in user guides

Hello

A review comment raised by Rafael about illustrations.

Are we going to store all the illustrations used in user guide chapters in NextCloud?
This could create storage space problems on NextCloud as illustrations do take a lot of storage space.

If we are storing illustrations in NextCloud, do we store PNG and ODG format? PNG format is the best to use, but ODG format is needed if text has been added to a screenshot.

Would appreciate a prompt answer so I make changes to Chapter 2 Producing LO Guides.

What I do is use Draw to combine text and a screenshot. Next group the two. With a right click, this can be converted to bitmap. Next save as an image (PNG).

Hello Dan

There is no need to create a bitmap. You can export illustrations with or without text directly from Draw into PNG format. Just use the default settings in the export dialog for PNG.

Hi Peter,

I brought this up because this requirement was present in the previous
version of the Contributor's Guide. When I first read the guide and then
started my first chapter update, I created some new images and saved them
in an ODG file. Later on I tried to figure out where to upload the ODG file
into NextCloud by looking for other ODG files, but found none.

Now, my opinion is that saving ODG files is only useful if the figure has
lots of annotations (arrows, callouts, etc). In such cases, reviewers can
edit the image and update annotations. In cases where the images are simply
a screenshot of a dialog without any annotation, then it's not really
necessary to upload the image to NextCloud because it would be very simple
to take a new screenshot if necessary.

As for the use of ODG by translators, maybe these files are not very
helpful to them. Consider a case where there is a dialog screenshot (the
dialog is in English) and lots of annotations in English too. A translator
will have to take a new screenshot and change the annotations manually.
Hence, the existence of an ODG file wouldn't be very helpful. We could ask
their opinion on this matter.

I think we have two possible paths:
1) We can drop this requirement from the Contributor's guide;
2) We could improve this procedure to provide more directions on how to
handle images. For example, for each chapter ODT file there could be an ODG
file with the same name containing all the images prepared for the chapter.
We could also highlight that this should be done only for images that have
annotations.

What path do you think is best?

Hi,
when translating the GS guides for each chapter we created a Draw file
with all illustrations (this enabled us to make screenshots separately -
somebody created the screenshots and somebody else transferred them to
the text).
The sizes:
GS42 Draw files: 24MB
GS64 Writer files: 22MB

So the Draw files require about as much space as the Writer files. Is it
crucial from the point of view of the Nextcloud space?
