Exporting Guides to XHTML or EPUB formats

Hi Doc'ters

I made some tests to check the export to XHTML (and EPUB) format of our
Guide chapters. Actually I created a new file based on Jean's latest
template and made some adjustments I want to share with you. Here are
some partial conclusions...

Figures:
- XHTML/EPUB cannot handle OLE objects so embedded drawings and
spreadsheets must be transformed to images (prefereably PNG) when
inserting in chapter.
- Images must be anchored as character inside the figure frame (if not,
the caption and image floats in the frame.
- Caption is centralized independent of the alignment settings in the
style (Bug?)
- The frame must be anchored as character in the Figure paragraph style,
which is renders better when centralized.

Tables:
- Best results if tables are centered in page.

Lists
- Lists with graphic bullets are not rendered. Therefore Note, Tips and
Warnings have no icons.
- Note, Tip and Warning paragraph background has random results,
sometimes it works, sometimes not (bug?)
- List position parameters are ignored, the results is a list where the
numbering (/bullets) and paragraph contents are not separated.
- I used a space in list position instead of tab, but as I said above,
no changes in the result.
- very bad rendering if the paragraph have first line indent with
negative value.

Browsers: I tested with Firefox and Brave (same engine as Chromium)

Under calibre epub reader, the rendering is even worse.

I have uploaded 2 files in the folder
LibreOffice Documentation/English/Contributor Resources/

test_template-xhtml.odt
and
test_template-xhtml.html

PS: the export to XHTML seems to create a bloated HTML...

Hi Olivier,

Svante has made some changes to the xsl files for the ODF TC. These files are used for XHMTL export. You find the files in https://github.com/oasis-tcs/odf-tc/tree/master/src/test/resources/odf1.3/tools/odf2html/export/xhtml

Perhaps you can test, whether the export becomes better, if using these files instead of the original ones. You find the original ones in your installation in share/xslt/export/xhtml.

Bug report related to one of the problems is
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=136606

Besides that, we have about 160 open bug reports with XHTML or EPUB topic.

Kind regards
Regina
