reviewing Chapter 2 of the Writer Guide

Hi

I am giving chapter 2 of the Writer Guide a second review.
I stumbled into a comment I can not reproduce.
Shravani wrote:
Or, click the Insert Special Character icon on the standard toolbar to open a list of favorite and recently used characters and click on the one you wish to insert (Figure 6). You can also open the Special Characters dialog by clicking the More Characters button on this list

Jean added a this comment:
This is a bit garbled now. Using the toolbar icon opens a list of favorites and recents, and also provides a link to open the full dialog. Would be useful to have an image of what the icon provides.

But when I click the Insert Special Character icon, it opens the dialog Special Characters. No more than that.

What do I miss?

Greetings, Kees

Kees,

I thought Shravani was still working on that chapter. Perhaps I’m wrong.

I don’t know why you’re seeing something different. What o/s are you using?

Jean

Hi Jean

I thought Shravani had updated the chapter and you did the first review. So I thought to do the second review.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am using Windows 10 and LibreOffice 6.4.2.2

Shavrani updated, I reviewed, and left it for S to deal with what needed to
be done in response to my comments. I didn’t think it was ready for someone
else to review. Hoping to hear from S about the status of the file.

Tomorrow I’ll look on my Windows 10 test machine to see what’s there on the
Special Characters icon. S was using W10, and I see the same on my Mac.
I’ll look on my Linux test machine too. This is a mystery!

Jean

Kees,
My Win10 setup showed the drop-down palette of Favourites from the
Special Characters icon, but my Linux setup didn't. So I dug around a
bit more and I have found the answer to the mystery. Look in the
"Visible buttons" list for the standard toolbar; you should see TWO
icons for Special Character (called Symbols on the list of visible
buttons), but usually only one will be visible on the toolbar. One
goes directly to the dialog; the other drops down the Favorites
palette. I don't know which is the default.

Shavrani,
The discussion in the chapter needs to mention this briefly, or other
readers will be confused too.

Hi Jean & Kees,

I have downloaded the file from the feedback folder updated with Jean's
comments and worked on all the required changes including the change in
images. Please let me know if that's not the protocol to be followed and if
the changes in the file had to be made directly in nextcloud for others to
know that someone is working on the file. The file is pending with one
topic where a little bit of research needs to be done.
About the above mail chain, I just looked at what is the default option. It
is the icon with the dropdown, please refer to the below screenshot for the
same. Ever since I downloaded LibreOffice I haven't made any changes
pertaining to this option in my Standard tollbar and I have only one
"Insert Special Character" option with a dropdown. So the guide was updated
as per the default option visible in my LibreOffice. Please let me know if
my understanding is correct.

Kind regards
Shravani

Ok, I will wait then.

Shavrani,

Hi Jean & Kees,

Download and edit is correct. Never make changes in the file in nextcloud.
(The status spreadsheet is the exception.)

When you say "the file is pending" I assume you mean you are still working
on it and will return it to Feedback when you're done. That's good. Don't
forget to add your initials and change the date on the filename. Meanwhile,
it's useful to put a note in the Status spreadsheet, for example your
initials in the "Checked out by" column and perhaps something in the
"Status" column, so we know it's being worked on or that it's ready for
second review. We don't really have a good, unambiguous system in place;
trying to improve it as we go along.

There are in fact two icons available for that toolbar. In your screen

capture, you can see there are two. They look the same in the list, but if
you choose the one highlighted in blue in your image, you'll see that it
comes up differently on the toolbar itself. One has the drop-down arrow;
one does not.

Hi Jean

I clicked the button Reset in de Toolbars tab of the Customize dialog (Tools > Customize), and indeed now the button Insert Special Characters has a drop-down palette of Favourites. So this one is the default.
Thanks for the reseach.

Hi Jean,

Thank you for a briefing on the procedures to be followed. Someone has
updated the status column on my behalf, for now, going forward I will do
it.
As per the screenshot shared by me and Kees reconfirmation on the same, I
will retain the guide with the same description.
Please let me know in case of any further changes.

Have a great weekend ahead.

Kind regards
Shravani

Hello,

The review is complete now and the same has been uploaded to the nextcloud
feedback folder for further review, with the file name
WG6402-WorkingWithText_SB_JHW_SB_20200413.odt.

Kind regards
Shravani

I will give it a second review then.

I have finished the Final edit of chapter 2 and placed it into the Published folder.
Please note that all menu paths and button were in Menupath or LOMenupath. I changed this into StrongEmphatis.

@ Shravani: you have added a new image for Figure 8, but you put the Caption into a textbox. Therefor the Figure had no number anymore. So I deleted the textbox and added a caption. Please use Insert caption from the context menu of a Figure next time.

@ Shravani: Also you use a theme in Windows, making your borders Yellowish. That way your images in the document also have a yellow title bar. That is not consistent with the rest of the images. So please use a standard theme when making images for Guides.

Kind regards, Kees

I have made some further corrections in this file.
On page 8 are two cross-references to Figure 6. One was correctly done
(using a field); the other was typed, not a field. I have corrected
the second x-ref.
On page 8 and on page 12, the figures were spaced using Returns.
Instead, use Wrap Off (from the context menu for the image (if no
caption) or the frame (if a caption).
The frame enclosing Figure 8 image and its caption should be anchored
to the paragraph As character. The image for FIgure 8 should be
anchored To Paragraph. Same for all figures enclosed in frames. This
was a new instruction from Olivier after the 6.0 book was compiled,
and I do not think any of the instructions on the wiki have been
updated. (Figures without captions are anchored As Character.)
On page 18 there was no step 3 under Figure 15. This was corrected by
right-clicking on the 4 paragraph and choosing "Bullets & Numbering >
Continue Previous Numbering".
Otherwise, good job! Those are minor problems.
And special thanks to Kees for updating the paragraph styles.

I have made the corrections and fiddled the page breaks a bit, and
returned the file to the Published folder.
