Image anchoring problem

I have just run into an issue I don't recall having encountered
previously. After inserting a small PNG image and adding a caption, I
want to increase the width of frame without resizing the image. I have
tried several different combinations of anchoring the image and frame,
but nothing prevents the image being resized in the same ratio as the frame.

Another odd-ball situation I found is that changing the anchoring of the
image causes it to disappear and the input jumps to the end of the document.

Has something changed in Writer's image handling in recent releases, or
am I doing something wrong.

Dave

Neither. I believe Writer's handling of images is astonishingly buggy, and has been for many years.

I draw your attention to https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47148 and also

There was a great of deal of coding changes dealing with image handling in
the 6.1 release cycle.
You find the meta issue for known issues related to that work here:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=116280
Then of course there are still some issues open on the meta issue 47148
referenced above.

That said I am able to resize a frame without resizing an image in the
frame, but that is not the default behavior. To do so first I need to
select the image, open the context menu 'properties' and on the first tab
of the property dialog under 'size' ensure that 'autosize' and 'relative
to' are not selected.

Best wishes,

Drew

Yes, I have seen most of Bruce's articles, including this one.

I was under the impression that TDF recently paid a developer to improve
the software's image handling.

Now the really disappointing part, I just opened the chapter document I
am reviewing in AOO 4.1.6 Writer and the image handling/anchoring frame
resizing works perfectly and images do not disappear.

Dave

Thanks Drew,

Yes, that was the bug and linked blog from where I picked up that " TDF
put up a tender to improve the situation with image handling".

I can't believe this obviously broken code got past alpha and finished
up in a release.

Unfortunately, your steps do not work for me. The image properties
dialog offers "relative to", but there is no "autosize" option. I have
seen the "autosize" option when editing previously inserted images, but
not on a first insert.

Best Regards
Dave

I'm just not having the problems you are with images, in fact it seems to
be working much better for me now then it ever did before.

As for the autosizing option, I just did that with a blank document,
inserted image in a frame and the option is there.

Hi all,

I have added some content to the LibreOffice 6.3 Release Notes regarding this feature: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/6.3#New_Feature:_Redaction

I tried to make it usable also as a user documentation, and reference for help pages. Though; not a documentation/marketing pro but a developer here, so please feel free to improve.

Maybe we can add it to 6.3 user guides?

Best,
Muhammet

Hi,

You're doing quite well with the explanation IMHO, Muhammet.
I tried the feature a month or so ago and it works as promised  Noce
and useful.

Thanks for the info and of course the work!

Greetings,
Cor

I have the same results as Drew. I am using LO 6.2.4.2 from our LO website. O/S: Ubuntu 18.04. I too opened a new Writer window, added a frame, and inserted a screenshot into it.

Dan

Yes, creating the frame and inserting an image into it is a partial
workaround, but it is not they way OOo and earlier versions of LO
worked, even if anchoring was not always great.

Inserting the image into the frame is fine, but the auto-generated frame
around the inserted caption still cannot be resized.

I have tried just about every possible alternative to do what is the
easiest thing in the world to do with AOO.

Tested with 6.2.4.2 and 6.3alpha under Windows 7, 8.1 & 10 both 32 & 64
bit. 6.2.4.2 64bit on Linux kernel 5.2 & 4.20 Haven't had time to test
on macOS, but wouldn't expect any different result.

Dave

Howdy Dave,

OK Yeah, it is a bit of a pain now isn't it.

Did a screen capture.. here it is https://youtu.be/1HrKJSrn7bU

Somebody should see if the first problem, start of the video, is already in
the issue tracker

Drew

Oops - I had to go play around and add that sound file! rendered one image
with half the screen capture gone and uploaded that, so that link is no
good.
The full 3 minutes of riveting video is here instead

Hi Drew,

Thank you, I finally got it working under Linux by adding a couple of
extra steps in the image properties:

  * Uncheck keep ratio.
  * Reset to original size

Best Regards
