FAQ : French to English translation

Hi, I see on your wiki's FAQ page that you are looking for volunteer
translators. I'm interested - can I help?

Jasmin

Hi Jasmin,

I've only been a volunteer a couple of months myself, but I seem to be the
only person who's currently working on translating the FAQs, so I'll let you
know what I know.

What remains to be translated are the answers to the questions that are
still in red on these two pages:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/Draw
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/Impress

You can find the answers to be translated on the corresponding French site.
I'm currently working through the Draw FAQs, but I don't have much time to
spend on it, so I only get one FAQ done every few days. Feel free to dive
in wherever you feel most comfortable. It does help if you're pretty
familiar with the app; the French FAQs aren't always very clear, and I've
found a couple of them that are just plain wrong. You can just post your
translations directly to the wiki. Let me know if you need any help with
that.

Also, if you take a look at the French page:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/FR/FAQ

you'll see the /questions diverses/ at the bottom of the page. I think it'd
be a good idea to translate them, too, or at least the first two categories.
That will require some rearrangement of the English entry page, though, and
I feel like I need the approval of someone who's been around longer than me
before I do that.

Please feel free to ask me any questions. Glad to have you on board.

Alan

Hi
First register yourself so that you can edit the wiki. Have you done any
wiki-editing before?

If not "Don't Panic", just translate the content and let other people
handle making the titles and bold bits look right. Some people specialise
in wiki-mark-up and others focus on the content. You'll gradually learn
the mark-up because you see it working so often and it keeps out of the way
quite neatly too.

Some are old (from OOo). Could you indicate precisely which are wrong
so that we can correct them?

Note: I subscribed the list with the "nomail" option so thank you to not
forget to put me in "To" field of your answer

Hi
Good work Alan! Sounds like you have already made tons of progress! I
never understand why people are so shy about working with wiki's. I think
they get "scared off" without even trying to look at how little skill is
needed to just edit contents. Plus they seem to want perfect results first
time without having to get anyone else involved to make it look pretty.
Also they are snowed-under just doing the guides. Unfortunately the guides
are a very low priority for translation teams.

So it is great to see someone IS working on the Faq wiki and that Alan has
gotten so far along with it almost entirely single-handedly.

Jasmin, or anyone else that fancies giving it a go for a bit - the trick is
to start off just writing the text, the contents/body-text. Let other
people make the headings look like headings and to set-up tables for you
and all the other bits&bobs that are just about making it look prettier.
As you edit more pages you will begin to see how easy that side of things
is and then you'll be able to easily help other new people with an
increasing amount of the layout the layout. To start with just treat it as
though you are editing plain-text.

I just noticed this on the fly. so often it happens that I need to set
non-anglophones at peace with their trepidations in regard to English -
especially in North America.

All this to say that perhaps we need some hammer and nails geek to nail
those translation details squarely to the wall!

As for Wiki, I can understand that trepidation: So few have enough time
in their chaotic lives to tackle that learning curve on top of all else.
This world has become a sick place, and what glimmer of hope that
remains, "may its tribe increase" as in Abou Ben Adhem.

Oops, I see I just lost my chat with Australia trying to do too much.
But it is 1:56AM here and about time for bed anyways.

Cheers all,

Bruce from Canada.

Hi
That is the whole point. The learning curve and set-up is
1. register yourself at the wiki
2. find a page you want to edit
3. click on the Edit 'button'
4. write and edit in plain text and leave it to other people to worry
about making things bold etc
5. click on "Save changes"

It's actually quite a lot harder to open LibreOffice to write a letter and
most people here can cope with doing that.

Tom,

I had a thought about the FAQs on the wiki. Take a look at this page on the
French FAQs:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/FR/FAQ

The bottom half of the page, starting with the second heading, says:

/*MISCELLANEOUS FAQs*

Rules: some rules for writing pages on this wiki
Wiki: questions about the use of this wiki
Development: questions for LibreOffice code developers (in English)
QA Quality Assurance: Questions About Quality Assurance tools: Bugzilla,
announcements, et/c.

Seems to me that if we had the first two sets of questions (Rules and Wiki)
posted on the English page, it might encourage people to dive into editing
the wiki. I've been planning to translate those after I get finished with
the ones I'm doing for Draw, but now I'm thinking I might jump ahead and do
these two sets first. I have to keep referring to them myself to figure out
how to do things.

One problem is where to post them. The parallel English page is laid out
differently:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq

Is it OK if I change the layout of that English page to make it match the
French more closely (while, of course, keeping all the info that's currently
there in English?)

Best,
Alan

I think go ahead and do it. The pages seem quite similar now so i don't
see any harm in making them identical. There's always the history of a
page if it turns out to create a problem.
