Automatic numbering and cross referencing problem

I know I have mentioned this before, but someone has to seriously look at the
automatic numbering and cross referencing system used in LibreOffice.

I am now back at my desk after a few problems to sort out after a lovely
holiday, that did include computers.

I am using the latest version of LO to continue with the Impress Guide, but
automatic numbering and cross referencing is giving me problems.

Each time I insert a new frame for a figure or move a frame to a new
position, the automatic numbering goes out of sequence. For example, the
figure number goes from Figure 16 to Figure 3. The fix is to run the update
tool and save. However, add or move another frame and exactly the same thing
happens.

Each time I move a paragraph that includes a cross reference to a frame to a
new position or delete a paragraph before or after the paragraph containing
a cross reference, then the cross reference indicates a figure number after
the original frame, for example instead of Figure 16 I get Figure 17. Again
the fix is to run the update tool and save, but again each time there is an
paragraph edit change, the same thing happens.

This problem reflects badly on LibreOffice, so any advice on how to solve
the problem would be appreciated.

Sounds like a bug report would be in order. I've noticed similar problems, but only in some files. I've not kept notes in which files and circumstances, though I should have. I keep intending to check whether the problems occur on Windows and Linux as well as my Mac, but haven't got around to it.

I've also been seeing some strange problems related to styles. Marc Pare from Marketing and I were talking about this recently. No, I don't have the energy right now to summarise what's occurred.

Hello Jean

This is happening with every user guide file I work on. However, since I have updated to the latest version of LO, the problem appears to be worse.

Where do I go to submit a bug report?

I am testing this on different operating systems, because I normally use my iMac to do the user guides. When I have tested the same file under Windows and Ubuntu I can submit the bug report.

This tells you how:

You really begin here:

I tried a quick search for the problem

Hello,

The former is RESOLVED FIXED but your comment says otherwise. That's
bad news.

Hello NOMNEX

I will be testing the same file using a Windows XP laptop and a Ubuntu laptop to see if I can isolate the bug as far as operating systems go. Expect another report in about a week's time. I do use an iMac operating Lion 10.7.5 to write the Impress user guide and I have a sneaky feeling that it is Mac OSX that maybe the problem.

Hello

After some testing using laptops with Windows (XP and 7) and Ubuntu, the
automatic numbering and cross reference problems appears to be ONLY and Mac
OS 10.5, 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 problem.

I cannot reproduce the problem using Windows or Ubuntu and would appreciate
if someone could tell me if they have the same problem. If you have, please
tell me your operating system.

I shall now try and submit a bug report so the software guys can explore the
problem a little deeper.

Hi
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

Bsd apparently has a sub-set of the commands available in Gnu&Linux so sometimes things probably do have to be re-written a bit for Mac and FreeBsd (and the rest).  On the Gnu&Linux side if it works in Ubuntu then it probably doesn't even need testing in other Debian family such as Mint.  It might be interesting to hear from someone running  a completely different family such as Redhat, Slackware, Arch or one of the independents such as SliTaz.

However, you have plenty to make a good bug-report as it is.  Further testing can be done by other people in the QA Team as part of normal bug-triaging.
