PING Dan Lewis: Getting Started with Base 4.0

Dan,

Do you have time to update the Getting Started with Base chapter to LO
4.0? I don't know what, if anything, is changing or how much work
might be involved.

Hi
I think Base needs to be the exception.  Upgrading it might be easier after the first full release, after the rest of the chapters are done.  Dan's choice though imo.  I think him and Alex have worked out a way to deal with one of the issues.

I'm hoping to publish the Getting Started guide within the next few
weeks, because I'd like to have a copy to display at SCALE, last
weekend of February. If one or more chapters can't be done in that
time, so be it.

What I can also do is get one copy of the book printed, without making
it available for sale to the public; in that case, I can include some
not-updated chapters; no one's going to look at it that closely.
Hmmm... now that sounds like a plan!

As far as I know, there are only one thing that should be changed: the removal of LDAP connectivity. A small section on how to use a default value in a list box needs to be added as well. Alex found the first, and the other came from a request on the user's mailing list.
I think I can do this over the week end.

Hi
Ouch :(  I know some people, well one person, that is staying with older versions in order to keep the LDAP connectivity so it seems a shame to lose it from the guide.  Also the devs list have said they might put it back if enough people make a fuss on their lists.  (Which i don't know how to do)

Hello Dan,

I wouldn't remove anything from the descriptions. There are many people,
who will start elder versions of LO - and wonder, that they will have
more functions inside LO as there are described in the books.

In the German "Handbuch" we have marked such things with "works since
..." or "works up to ...". Example: Charts in the report - don't work
since LO 3.5. We will describe how to edit a chart in a report and mark
it as "buggy since ...". Could be, that there is somebody, who will fix
it. Also the native connector of MySQL, which doesn't work any more in
LO 4.0 RC1 or the LDAP-problem you described above.

Regards

Robert

I was not as clear as I could have been. I was thinking the same way you were: I just did not state it as well. My comment about LDAP connectivity: as of LO 4.0, Base will not connect to a LDAP address book even though it may be one of the choices in "Connect to existing database" dropdown list in the Base Wizard.
Thanks for noticing this for me.
I am reviewing the Getting Started with Base chapter. Both of the changes that need to be made are discussed only in the Base Guide itself. So, there will be any new additions that need to be made for this chapter. I have made some changes to make the wording better.

I downloaded the chapter and went through it with change tracking turned on. I added a caution box because of what Alex had noticed. The other item I mentioned about list boxes belongs solely in the Base Guide. I change some of the wording to make it clearer. I left a comment about the naming of the Data Sources window.
The file is in the Getting Started folder, Draft LO 4.0 folder:
http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/getting-started/draft-lo-4.0/getting-started-with-base/view.
Now I can take some time out watching the snow fall. After light rain day and night since late last week, a little white is nice.
