[Bug 49176] Writer: Custom Document Information, Conditions and Variables

For attention by JohnS. I've copied the text in below.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49176

Hi Jean
I've spent quite a while on this, trying everything I could think of to make it work. It doesn't.
The text is a carry through from the OOo documentation. Checking their website shows the text is in their user guide, 'though it's dated December 2010.
I loaded and tried their latest release, AOO3.4, and it doesn't work in there either.

I've come to the conclusion that if it ever did work, it no longer does.
I'm changing Chapter 14 to reflect this, and to include the document property items that are available, but which weren't included in the chapter.

As soon as I'm done, I'll get to the three chapters you've dealt with and sort them out.

Regards
JohnS

John,

Thanks so much for taking time to research this. This is a really good
example of errors in our docs not being caught for years because
neither OOo nor LO have had enough reviewers with the experience and
knowledge and time to do a thorough job of reviewing. Glad it's being
fixed now. Can you update the bug report?

Just for information, I think it was possible prior version 3. There is
an old article referring to this feature, as it is described in the
writer manual V.3.3

Hi

Just a comment, it's possible to use custom document properties for conditions but the example given in
the guide uses 'Set variables' which does not seem to work as you discovered. In fact I can't seem to
make it work for any document "variable". Document properties works well though so the example
would work if you switched the document variable to a custom property (File -> Properties the tab
Custom Properties, enter a name, a type and a value you for your variable).

You might know this but in case you don't I thought I'd to mention it.

Niklas Johansson

Hi Niklas.
I did try using a variable that I had entered into the Custom Properties page. This does not work.
Switching a document variable, such as WORD or PARA into Custom Properties and attempting to redefine it with a fixed value does not work.
The variables for document properties can be used in a condition but no others. A list of these variables can be found in the Help page: 'Variables - document properties'.
Also in the Help, at 'formulating conditions' can be found the statement 'You cannot use internal variables, such as page and chapter numbers, in condition expression'. Though not explicitly mentioning any others, it does seem that it applies to any others than those listed in the 'Variables -document properties page'.
The next User Guide will reflect this.

Given the above, this is probably not a bug, but it could be altered to an enhancement request by the bug reporter.
I'll go back to the bug page and report.
