There's no need to reopen a discussion already closed. On my part, I'll replace W-XP screenshots whenever possible. The updated draft of Calc chapter 1 has just been uploaded and is ready to be revised.

Thanks Jean, Tom, and everyone for being so attentive to the mailing list. Communication in this team is so fluid that many a company should take as an example.

Hi :)
Screenshots that appear on a web-site are fine, because they are easy to remove when/if we get served with a cease&desist type of notice. It's not so easy to swap out images in printed books that have already been bought, printed and held by thousands of people out there. I think it's a LOT easier to avoid the issue now than to deal with paying legal experts time, adding extra days in courts, perhaps paying damages afterwards. It's not likely to be the main thrust of an MS suit against us but it might be an extra card they play in court timed to gain tactical advantage by distracting our defence from the main fight. MS Office is a major percentage of MS profits. To think that MS wont come after us at some point seems very naive unless LO remains a tiny percentage of the market. Under TDF LO has grown significantly faster than during any equivalent time-frame under Sun.
I don't see the point in risking it when we really don't need to. There are a tiny percentage of
pix that are significantly different in Windows so it makes sense to minimise our risks to that
tiny percentage. Also, why promote MS in the guides?

The Docs group some time ago decided that it's really not an issue and
we are not worrying about WindowsXP pix. Indeed we are not worrying
about Windows 7 pix, though we mostly avoid them when possible. As Tom
notes, legal opinion differs on this topic. I choose to ignore it...
especially where WindowsXP is concerned.

In other words, feel free to replace all the pix in the Calc Guide for
v3.4; that's certainly a good thing to do, but IMO not by any means

Thanks for the warning.
That being the case, I'll go back on my steps to replace the screenshots.
But we should let the entire community know about this matter. I don't know
about the other guides, but the Calc one has quite a few. I'm currently
working on chapter 2 where about 80% of screenshots are from Windows XP.

Tomorrow, I'll upload the corrected version of chapter 1.

Hi :)

There are potential legal issues with using Xp for screen-shots. If it's
reasonably easy to replace them that would make sure we are not open to a
potential problem if Microsoft feel their profits and market dominance are
threatened. With OOo it was less of an issue as Sun made an effort to
avoid marketing it in USA. Legal experts seem to be split on just how much
of an issue it is.

I have uploaded a new Calc Guide Chapter 1 draft for revision.
But I could not "submit it for review" because I keep getting this error:

New sections are clearly labeled with comment bubbles.

All out-dated screenshots were changed. However, the final result is a
mixture of different themes:

* XP-silver
* Windows XP
* Adwaite + evolve (added in this last revision)

For the sake of aesthetic consistency, I would have changed them all to
match the same theme, but in many cases XP-silver (or even Windows XP)
looks better than Adwaita+evolve because window frames are more clearly

The section on "Copying or Moving Sheets" may require some
"synchronisation" with the "Getting Started With Calc" latest draft. I
intentionally rewrote this section in a how-to structure instead of using
the same text in Getting Started.

Let me know your comments so that further amendments may be made.
