Questions from Users List & to do

Hi
There are a couple of questions in the Users List at the moment that people here might be able to solve easily.

1. Someone accidentally used Crtl & Enter a LOT of times and now wants to use find&replace (or something) to get rid of them.  I know "\n" is a normal enter but is there a character to mark Ctrl Enter?  The thread in Nabble ...

2. A Writer table.  Some cells need to be "checked" (2 diagonal lines from corner-to-corner).  Is there an elegant way of doing this easily?  His inelegant example is here

The thread in Nabble

If you happen to know a simple answer to either of the above then great, please let me know.  If it would take some digging around to find out then don't bother, it's really not the Doc Team's job

More importantly please add your name to the Doc Team's wiki
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Teamwork
unless you are shy.  Also there is a wish-list of what people would like the Docs Team to do
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Production#Wish_List_for_User_Documentation
and there si a beginning of a "community Documentation" section that could use a bit of tidying and adding to
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/HowTo

Screen-shots are generally to be taken in Gnu&Linux, preferably Ubuntu, with a specific theme but since the wiki pages are easier to edit to remove 'wrong' images it's possibly ok to use screen-shots any which way you like.  We want to try to keep the printable User Guides as reasonably consistent as possible but wiki pages don't matter so much.  At least, that's my opinion.

I think it might be great if we could help Danishka do "scalar vector graphics" screen-shots to possibly replace the ones in the current guides but only for the books in his/her project for school/college books.  Could we set-up somewhere in Alfresco or on the wiki to store all the updated svgs/eps?  Would it be more appropriate to get the Design Team involved?

Thanks and regards from

You'd want to point the guy in the direction of regular expressions. I
don't have time to go into detail right now, but that would be his
solution. If you look hard in the LibreOffice online help and search
the lists, you'll find the info needed.

It would, of course, be an ideal solution to have .svg screenshots,
but a tremendously-demanding job to produce them. I don't see that
happening in the near future. The only answer would be to use higher
res for shots - although others more knowledgeable about typography
have already commented about this in past threads.

HTH.

But the application is statically sized, right?
Which means that the application on a higher-resolution screen is not scaled, just expanded.
If you take a shot of a dialog, it would be the same pixel resolution on an 800x600 and 1920x1400, right? Assuming of course that the small screen would be large enough to display it.
This would basically mean taking a bitmap and converting it to a vector graphic to be able to stretch it?

Sincerely,
Morten

Hi Morten,

This would basically mean taking a bitmap and converting it to a vector
graphic to be able to stretch it?

The scaleability of a vector graphic is precisely because it is a
vector graphic. Convert a bitmap to a vector graphic and it won't
become any more scalable, because it will remain a bitmap inside a
.svg file... Already you *can* scale a bitmap, but you can't increase
its fidelity. Or is there something I'm missing?

As is my point. Since an application is already bitmapped on the screen, a screenshot would by definition be a bitmap. A 250x400px dialog box would be 250x400px on a larger screen as well. So one can grab a screen and save as SVG as much as one would like, it would still be a stretched bitmap. Is this not correct?

I see what you mean. But if you work on a high-res screen and then
increase your font sizes, icon sizes, etc., you could get "bigger"
screen shots, though. Right?

Hi
Ahah, i hadn't thought of that.  Also, as David pointed out, it would be a huge task.  Are the screen-shots in the Guides lower resolution than the original screen-shots and if so did anyone keep the originals?

Almost everyone seems really happy with our screen-shots so i'd like to stay with them.  Jaimon particularly was a total star racing through a large number of them quite quickly.  Even so it took a long time.  Are Danishka and Jaimon still around?

The questions from the Users List seem to have ben solved now.  Thanks everyone that helped on or off-list there
Thanks all and regards from
